Expressing his sympathy with Mr. Harrison's business worries, thanking him for anecdotes about Thomas Moore, and expressing curiosity about Croker, who seems to have made many enemies. Review[er]s of Stones of Venice--Blackwood and Athenaeum being "at their dirty work again," though good notices in the Literary Gazette and Daily News. The book seems to be holding its own very well. His nephew Dr. Richardson, having given up a good town practice to please his wife, gets on as well as one could expect. In Scotland his son & wife, Millais and Dr. Acland, are being deluged by rain. "We Scotch are said to be a dry people & tis well we are." His son writes that the Athenaeum review is their idea of "Eulogism."

Euphemia Chalmers Gray, called Effie or Phemy, was born in Bowerswell House, Perth, and went to Avondale School, near Statford-on-Avon.
